The Best Holiday Party Dresses For Every Body Shape!
Holiday Party Dresses By Body Shape
The holidays are already stressful enough…worrying about what to wear to a party shouldn’t be another anxiety-inducing task. My biggest tip to alleviate that pressure is…know your body shape! Knowing your body shape and how to dress your body makes it way easier to figure out what to wear, what will look good, and what will make you feel confident. If you don’t already know your body shape, make sure you check out this post with step-by-step instructions and a video on how to figure it out! Below, I’m sharing my favorite holiday party dresses for each body shape…
If you’re looking for more holiday style tips, make sure you check out this post with all of my holiday outfits!
First, I want to talk about this gorgeous Melissa Odabash dress. I love the metallic print and dramatic flowy silhouette. It also comes with a belt you can tie around the waist to create more definition. I’m wearing it with wedges, but I’ve also worn it with sneakers. If I really wanted to dress it up, I’d opt for pumps.
This is a wonderful holiday party option for anyone with an inverted triangle body shape. The asymmetrical one-shoulder neckline minimized the width of the shoulders by vertically breaking it up. The collarbones and shoulders are such a sexy part of a woman’s body so why not show them off, right!?
I’m breaking down what to look for when shopping for holiday party outfit ideas and my shopping picks for each body shape below…

Rectangle Body Shape
I am a rectangle body shape, so I have plenty of experience in this area! If you have a rectangle shape, it means all of your measurements are pretty much the same. So when I’m looking for a dress, my goal is to find one that cinches and defines my waist while creating a balanced top and bottom so I can create that coveted hourglass shape. When shopping, look for dresses that have shoulder-building details, lower interesting necklines, cutouts around the midsection, ruching at the waist, color-blocking around the waist, or a waist belt. It’s also a plus if you can find a dress with an A-line or full skirt to balance out the top half of your body.
Having a circle body shape means that your waist is larger than your hips, bust or shoulder measurements. If you’re a circle body shape, your goal will be to minimize the waist. To do that, look for dresses that have waist-defining details like wrap-style dresses, ruching around the tummy, details just under the bust, an empire waist, A-line or fuller skirts, and scoop, portrait, or v-necklines.
Having a triangle (also referred to as pear) means that your hip measurement is larger than your bust and shoulder measurements. Your goal will be to balance out your bottom half by adding volume with shoulder building details like puff sleeves, shoulder pads, or off-shoulder tops. You can also wear dramatic necklines and anything that draws the eye upward.
Next up is the inverted triangle! Having an inverted triangle body shape is the exact opposite of a triangle body shape. So your shoulder measurement is larger than your hip and waist measurements. Your goal will be to create a balance between your upper and lower body by wearing full and A-line dresses with strategic necklines like a v-neck or scoop neck. Cap sleeves or a halter neck will also help create the illusion of slimmer shoulders. Even though they are very on-trend…try to avoid puff shoulders or any shoulder-building details!
Lastly, having an hourglass body shape means that your waist is clearly defined in relation to your hips, bust, and shoulder measurements. If you have an hourglass body shape, your goal is to accentuate your assets and cinch that waist even more. You can look for dresses with a waist belt, that are form-fitting, have a scoop or v-neckline, and wrap-style dresses. You can also look for dresses with paneled waists, fuller skirts, and peplum details.
