Styling The Basics | Blazers

What to Look For and How to Style It…

In the video below I’m tackling the wardrobe basic, the blazer. I’m explaining what to look for when buying a blazer including hemline, sleeve length and button placement and some ideas about how you can style your blazers.

Sleeve Length of Blazer

The first thing to consider is the sleeve length. There’s nothing wrong with a three-quarter sleeve but your blazer will be more versatile if its full sleeve length. The hemline of the sleeve should fall between the wrist joint and your first thumb joint.

How Long Should Your Blazer Be?

Next I want to address the hemline of the blazer. There are several options. Traditionally, I would look for a blazer that hits your leg joint. That’s where your leg and your hip intersect. What you have to consider is the proportions of your legs and torso. For example, the longline blazer that’s in style now can potentially make your legs look shorter than they are. But, if you already have long legs and a short upper body, it could actually make you look more proportionate.

Button Placement

One other fundamental is button placement. If it’s a one-button blazer, which is what I would recommend… the button should be between you belly button and under your bust.

What to Wear Under Your Blazer

If you’re feeling risqué and fashion forward, you can wear a bralette under your blazer.  I’m wearing a white one above.

You can easily wear a silky cami like I am in the picture directly above. But, always think about whether you can take off your blazer and still feel comfortable.

A basic t-shirt is a nice casual option to wear under your blazer. You can wear it on weekdays, weekends, maybe on casual Fridays at work.  Other options include a sleeveless shell, blouse, button-down shirt, turtleneck, etc. There are endless possibilities!

What to Wear on Your Lower Half

You can do a lot here too! You can wear the blazer with white jeans, blue jeans, black jeans, black pants, wide leg trousers, tapered ankle trousers, jogging pants, a skirt, a dress, etc. A blazer is a great option for when you know it might be a little cold. It’s chic, elegant and easy to throw on.

Bottom line… you have SO many options when it comes to styling your blazer. Once you find a specific blazer that fits you well and you love, buy it in a couple of colors so you have some that you know you love! The pink blazer I’m wearing in the video and pictures (above) is a winner and I recommend it. It runs large so size down one full size.
