Hairstyles are all about making you look like the best version of yourself. You may not think so but hair is a big deal! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. The right hairstyle can help you look younger and feel more confident. I didn’t think hair was that big of a deal until I started going through menopause and realized how much it’s changed. Now I do everything I can to make sure my hair (and hairstyles) looks youthful!
I absolutely love doing my hair! I just wish I had more time to do it. Even if you don’t enjoy doing your hair, or you don’t have a lot of time for it, you can create a much more youthful look by playing around with your style! After 40, you want hairstyles that will make you look younger, but are still age-appropriate and don’t look too over the top. You don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard!

#1 | Play Around With Teased Hair
The hairstyles you can get away with vary from woman to woman. It depends on how thick your hair is, how long or short it is, etc. These are just a few ideas so make sure you watch the videos I linked above for more ideas and how to do them!
Teased hair can make you look much more youthful and sexy. Overly straight hair can look a bit boring, so you should try teasing the hair around the front and crown to create some volume! Teasing your hair can cause damage, but you can get a lot of volume with gentle motions (just make sure you don’t overdo it)! Teased hair is a bit more flattering and adds plenty of personality to your style. Best of all, it only takes about 30 seconds. You can add hairspray to help it hold if you’d like.
#2 | Half Up Hairstyles
Half up hairstyles are really easy to do and they’re super functional because they keep your hair out of your eyes and off of your face. Half up styles are super feminine and pretty. You can create a fun, carefree look in less than 3 minutes. Just grab the hair in the front and gently tease it, use pins or a clear hair tie to hold it in place, and you’re set! You don’t want it to pull too much. Just flip it up and play around with a small ponytail or bun. You can tuck it into your hair tie to create this cool effect that looks really casual, yet somewhat deliberate.
#3 | You’re Not Too Old For Ponytails!
You can wear a pony at any age. So, don’t think you’re too old at 40. A good ponytail is actually super flattering and playful. Pull all of the hair back so it’s smooth and put it in a standard ponytail. If you have some bald spots you’re self-conscious about, you can use a powder or play around with your hair until it’s covered. Play with the placement of the ponytail until it has the poof you want. Run your fingers through the front and pull it out a bit so you get that cute volume on top. Don’t worry if it takes you a few tries, just keep going until it looks even. Wrap your own hair around your hair-tie and tuck it in underneath the ponytail. It gives you a cute hair-tie cover that matches your hair color perfectly. Ponytails look great and they’re super fun, youthful, and really easy.
#4 | Try Loose Waves
It’s really youthful and cool to go for a loose waves hairstyle. It’s really easy to do with a basic curling wand. Just part in the middle and then take pieces of hair about 3 inches down and wrap them around your curling wand. Don’t hold too long because you aren’t going for tight curls, just loose waves. Try about 10 seconds or less. You can curl the hair at the front away from your face but play around until you get a style that works for you. Loose waves look super sexy and take years off your face. Also, curled hair doesn’t get as greasy looking as straight hair, which is nice if you’re on the go and don’t have time to wash your hair every day.
#5 | Embrace Up Do’s
Up do’s can make you look very young! A high bun is super chic and cool. Pull your hair back and strategically wrap it. You can later pull it out a bit to make it look more casual. Looser updos that are messier make you look much younger. You can even pull some hair out at the front to frame your face, but don’t go overboard.
