Third place – Cyberpunk 2077
Although the long -awaited novelty from CD Projekt Red She did not produce the expected revolution in the industry, she still was able to seriously captivate her narrative. Night-City analogues in games cannot be found yet: this city can be admired for tens of hours, constantly discovering something new for yourself. Dialogs and scenes are made from the first person with an unprecedented setting quality for RPG; The characters are alive, catchy remarks, interesting stories – in a word, almost everything that you can want from the plot role -playing, in Cyberpunk 2077 Made excellently.
“Almost” – because, besides all of the above, we also expected from her wide opportunities for waging the role of a protagonist. But in fact, these opportunities came out very limited: before us is not new New Vegas , But rather a new one Deus Ex , where the hero and his path to the finale are written in advance, and our solutions are for the most part local character. Cyberpunk 2077 and gameplay is much closer to Immersive SIM than to classical RPG: characteristics and skills play an important role, several solutions and approaches can be found for each problem, but only a slight effect gives only a slight effect in the Skillchek dialogs.
However, instead of lamenting what the game is not, it is better to appreciate it for what it really can offer: the best scenario work among, possibly, all fresh AAA-IGR in general.
Second place – Final Fantasy VII Remake
Series Final Fantasy always strove for greater dynamics, hoping to break away from step -by -step roots. In recent years, however, she did not really succeed: Final Fantasy XV I lost my tactical depth and became much more action than RPG. Fortunately, Final Fantasy VII Remake, who borrowed a lot of things from her, finally balance everything. Here, partners of the hero you have chosen do not lay out in battle in the battle, but usually do not die – and the player’s task is to timely switch between all three fighters for manual control over the use of skills and the proper distribution of “aggro” enemies. This is an extremely elegant and correct solution that allowed the game to withstand an excellent balance between the speed of the action and the tactics of step -by -step classics.
In general, this is an excellent JRPG: very linear, but flavored and optional content, with memorable characters, and cool production of Kitszen. This is a very spectacular attraction, from which it is difficult to come off and which does not get tired of surprising both new arrivals and the original fans. And finally, this is just a worthy return of the Final Fantasy series: in the 2010s it was going through not the best times.
The developers and the setting – the cyberpan city of Midgars turned out perfectly. High Tech and Low Life here there are side by side: rubbish -lit slums and virtual reality, orphaned shelters and giant robots
Deserve mention
In 2020, supplemented publications of the two most outstanding JRPG 2010s were published: Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition And Persona 5 Royal. They deserve the most close attention, but did not get into the top for a simple reason: the first appeared in us back in 2011, the second-in 2017. Then they undoubtedly were one of the best, but here we are talking about independent projects of 2020.
In addition to the games of the past, this year we were also pleased with the games of the future. World of Horror And Baldur’s Gate III So far, they are in early access, but they look very promising: for sure on the release, they will be able to compete for the title of the best RPG … 2021? 22nd?
Lovers of complex moral elections instead of "Cyberpan" in 2020 pleased Wasteland 3. In the post -core colorado, players constantly have to balance between attachment to one or another characters, loyalty to the local authorities and their own moral compass. There are no light or unequivocally successful solutions: you have to pay for something. However, despite the general gloom of the setting, there are plenty of humor in the game.
And in the world of MMORPG the main release of the year is, of course, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. The main online role -playing continues to receive large updates once every two years, which are struggling to return interest in the game of the dumped part of the audience. Shadowlands radically reviewed the pumping system, added a ton of new content, but at the same time it turned out to be quite gentle and for those who are not ready to devote too much time to it. And she, of course, continued to develop the history of Warcraft, which has recently been bent for 25 years.
First place – Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Series Yakuza I have always been at the junction of two genres: the structure is like in JRPG, and battles are like in bitemaps. On April 1, 2019, the developers decided to joke, releasing the video on the seventh part of the cycle showing the classic step -by -step combat. And when it turned out that this idea came to the fans, they took and really changed the fighting in the game. And so-unexpectedly-they made the best RPG year according to the version of gambling.
At first Yakuza: Like a Dragon and really perceived as a joke. The protagonist loudly proclaims that life is a game, openly seeks to pump and represents oncoming gopniks in the form of a wide variety of monsters from urban folklore. In battle, the heroes urinate enemies with BDSM stages, doused with champagne and pour out with fetid breathing. Each new profession, every new skill – a potential reason to grin from ear to ear. The developers do not occupy fantasies: they are as creative as possible to the combination of genre conventions and daily realities.
But the humorous approach to battles is far from the only dignity of the seventh "Yakuza". You won’t go far on it alone, and the developers understand this: after the first few chapters, when the player is already starting to take the battleship for granted, jokes go deep into the background, giving way to gangster intrigues typical of the series, numerous plot turns and dramatic scenes.

The presentation of history is also all right: the dialogs are natural, the voice acting is penetrated, the facial expressions are alive, the music is sophisticated. Yes, and as a Japanese simulator, the game works perfectly: there are three authentic Japanese cities, and all types of leisure and entertainment-who is tired of the plot and sid-quest, he will cut into Majong or tries himself in golf.
Let Yakuza: Like a Dragon be not perfect in the matters of battles (after all, this is the debut of the developers in this field), it more than compensates for this with its wide soul and ardent character. For this we love her.
