Why You SHOULD Switch to Natural Deodorant!

Native Deodorant reached out to me recently and asked if I would be interested in reviewing their natural deodorant. I jumped at the chance as I am already a natural deodorant user and believer. I’ll dive more into “the why” in a minute…

Why I Started Using Natural Deodorant

The first person to recommend natural deodorant to me is my old friend, and former running buddy, Tierney. Tierney and I ran the New York City Marathon together in 2004. We both qualified for Boston and then ran the Boston Marathon together in 2005. When you run together, you really develop a trust and love that is very hard to replicate. And, even though TT and I don’t talk all the time, I think about her often… and I know we would always pick up right where we left off. Anyway, when she strongly urged me to try more natural beauty products including natural deodorant… it made me think more seriously about my health….and I decided to give it a whirl.

Natural Deodorant

After TT’s recommendation, I started using a natural deodorant (about five years ago)…  and it worked!! But, there were definitely a few issues with that brand.. so I was excited to see how Native Deodorant compares.

After going Native for a few weeks here’s why I decided to switch: 1) The smell is awesome! 2) Native doesn’t leave clumps (the other brand did) and lastly 3) It doesn’t yellow my white shirts (again, other brand did) P.S. how awesome is the rainbow in the pictures above! Those were taken at the Grand Canyon.

Why Should You Use Natural Deodorant?

Natural deodorant means natural ingredients that are not potentially harmful to your health. Aluminum, which is in most deodorants, may be linked to some serious health problems, including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Native Deodorant is safe, effective, and non-toxic.

How Does it Work?

One of the key ingredients in Native Deodorant is tapioca starch, which absorbs wetness. Shea Butter helps to keep your underarms moisturized and other natural ingredients create light and fresh scents. Your body may need a bit of time to adjust to a natural, aluminum-free deodorant. Give your body two weeks.

Native goes on clear and does not clump, which I really appreciate since my old, natural deodorant did clump. It also does NOT yellow your shirts! Yay!

Subscription Option

By the way, you can subscribe and Save 17%! I’m definitely going to do this… more for the time savings, than money. You can sign up for a one, two, three or fourth-month delivery. I’m thinking one stick will last more than one month. I’ve been using mine for many weeks, and there’s still quite a bit left.

You can also choose different scents depending on your preferences. I bought the Coconut & Vanilla option, and the smell is lovely. I do not like strong smells. This is very subtle.

What’s In It?

I love how the ingredients are very clearly printed on the back of the deodorant (see image above). Native is filled with the good stuff from coconut oil, to shea butter to tapioca starch (absorbs wetness). It’s also important to share what’s NOT in it:  aluminum, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, triclosan, talc, etc.

Does It REALLY Work?

It all sounds great, but let’s get down to business… does it work?? 100%… YES. It works! I can run six miles, and still smell fresh as a daisy. I’ve also gone a couple of days without showering (yes, I  know, gross) and I still smell great! That is saying something! 😉 Your body may take a little time to adjust to the aluminum-free deodorant, but be patient, it will. Give yourself at least two weeks. If you want a bit more evidence of its effectiveness, you can also read through the 6,000+, 5-star reviews here.

There are all of these small changes we can make… to be healthier… and take better care of ourselves. Natural deodorant is one of those small changes… you can feel great about! I know I do.

  1. Hi Erin, Thank you so much for this post. I have been looking to make the switch away from aluminum deodorants and have not found one that actually works during my workouts. Also, I love the sneakers–would you recommend them for running off trails as well? i am wondering if they are too heavy. thanks again!

    1. Hi Ruth… Salomon trail runners are AMAZING sneakers for trail running. I would not recommend them for running on the street. Buy Hoka brand running shoes to protect your feet and joints. Or if you want more traditional running shoes, the Asics Gel Kayano sneakers. Not the sexiest option, but SO great for running! Erin xo

  2. I love and use Native deodorant. The only negative is it leaves white marks on my black shapers and tanks.

    1. Pretty much all deodorant does that. Just use the top of your pantyhose or Spanx and rub the white marks out. Do not use water, just rub dry.
