3-Step Outfit Formula
You might know intellectually that date night is a great idea. It’s quality time with your spouse without kids. It’s a no-brainer, right?? But it’s really not that simple. First, you have to find time. Right now, living abroad without my usual support system, finding extra time feels nearly impossible. The other issue is… what the heck do you wear? Because once you have date night on the calendar there is a little internal pressure to “get your sexy on.” You know what I mean. And, if you’ve been eating your way through summer like I have, you’re not exactly at your goal weight or feeling awesome about your body. This contributes to the stress of getting dressed. In order to make it simpler for all of us (myself included) I’m sharing a fail-safe, date night outfit formula this fall… so there’s one less obstacle to spending that QT with your love.

Step #1 – Sexy Top
The first step to an easy, date night look…a sexy top! All you have to do is pick a top you feel sexy and confident in. And maybe it shows a little skin? That’s your choice! In this look, I’m wearing a black cap sleeve bodysuit by Lulus. It definitely has that sexy factor because it’s fitted and has a special, v-shaped, square neckline. If you prefer more coverage at the chest, try some strategic cutouts instead. I mentioned cutouts as one of the biggest fall fashion trends here. I love that the cap sleeves give this top a bit more modesty.
You could wear this bodysuit on its own, or add a third layer like I did. I love adding that extra layer in the fall and winter. It not only looks more polished and chic, it also gives you a lot more coverage. I’m not feeling great about my tummy or arms right now so the blazer feels like a sophisticated security blanket.
This exact Balmain blazer is a MAJOR splurge, so I linked a similar option for less. I’ve done an entire post reviewing whether this Balmain blazer is worth the investment here. I will say that the fit is impeccable and I love how the strong shoulders make your waist look smaller. (I’m wearing a size 38 for reference. I typically wear a size 2 or 4).
By the way, if you’re still not sure about the bodysuit trend, I shared why women over 40 should own a bodysuit in this post!

Step #2 –Dark Wash Jeans
The next step is to throw on your favorite dark wash jeans. Yes, it’s that easy! You can never go wrong with a great pair of slimming, dark wash jeans. These AG jeans are on the trendy side because of the relaxed fit. I bought them during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year and have been wearing them non-stop! You could also stick to your classic skinnies if that’s what you feel most comfortable in. Another key element of the perfect pair of jeans for date night? They have to be mid to high rise! I prefer high so I have the feeling that everything is sucked in. This pair is actually more of a mid-rise which is a rarity for me these days, but I’m loving them. To really emphasize the waist, or create a waist, make sure you wear a belt. The black Valentino belt I’m wearing is reversible so it’s a two-fer!
A quick note about the Ben-Amun necklace…it’s unfortunately sold out but I linked a similar option and will add a link to the exact piece when it is back in stock.

Step #3 – Wear Heels
The last step to an easy date night look is to throw on some heels! I know that not all of you can wear heels, so if that’s you, try wedges, block heel booties, or a modern pair of flats. These black suede, Schutz booties are super sleek! They have a 2.5” heel (very manageable and easy to walk in), a pointed toe that’s very sexy (the toe box is roomy), and they’re legit comfortable! These booties are also under $150…which is hard to find for a chic pair that is this versatile!
