10 Simple Ways To Make Your House Look More Elegant and Expensive
Elegant, Chic, Sophisticated Home
Flipping through design books with a glass of wine in hand is one of my favorite ways to relax after a long day. I love the beautiful images, the color combinations, the unique décor ideas — it’s all so inspiring. To that end, I’m not spending weekends with a sledge hammer knocking down walls. I can’t make all my design book dreams come true. But, I do find subtle ways to mimic the looks I love and introduce them into my home in a way that fits both my style and budget. For me, it’s more practical to fixate on what I CAN do to freshen my space and introduce new trends. When you can’t tackle an entire home renovation, it’s best to focus on your décor details. Details matter! Here are 10 simple ways to make your house look more elegant and expensive. Any one, or a combination of these improvements can take your home from dull to delightful.

Houseplants
Plants! You need them. I’ve shared before about my black thumb. And, admittingly, a trip to Home Depot or Lowe’s to shop for plants isn’t really my idea of enticing entertainment for a weekend. BUT, when I discovered Sill.com, I realized plants could be ordered and delivered right to my front door. You can search by resilience, ease of growth and pet-friendly options (yes and yes and yes). Here are some of my favorite low-maintenance finds. I especially love the snake plant because it’s easy to care for, purifies indoor air, and removes toxins!
A great storage bench at the end of your bed or in an entryway serves two purposes. It looks chic AND provides storage for shoes, blankets or other items that might be strewn about and cluttering your space. Let's face it, a clean and organized space is always going to look more elegant!
Baskets make storage look pretty! I’ve had these World Market baskets for almost 2 years now and they still look brand new. This Amazon basket is a new find, currently in my cart. It’s huge and I’m pretty sure I need it for my living room, stat.
I know, I know – but did you really think I could make it through a post without mentioning pillows and pillow covers? New throw pillows really DO freshen up a couch or chair. As the seasons change, why not add a few to your space? Here are some neutral options I have my eye on. Don’t forget to vary the size and texture for a more elegant and elevated look!
Art is very subjective so it's important you buy what you love, and what speaks to you. It can be especially challenging to find extra-large artwork at a reasonable price. I’ve recently discovered large paper tapestries at Anthropologie and Etsy, and purchased one for my home office. I love the unique, unexpected texture and how easy they are to hang. Also, what a great value considering their size!
Old or beat-up barstools can really look dated in your home. I recently recovered mine for an easy refresh which is a great option if you are up for a DIY project. If not, here are some options that would offer a contemporary update to your kitchen island or breakfast bar.
A new mirror is a wonderful way to brighten up your space and even make it look larger. Try one large piece or a cluster of smaller mirrors for an updated look.
A new light fixture or sconce in your entryway, kitchen, bedroom or bath makes a big impact! I'm loving these new contemporary and classic swing arm fixtures. Such a stylish touch in a hallway, above a built-in, or over a gallery wall.
Just like pillows, new throw blankets add such a comfortable and cozy look to a family room. Rolled into a basket or draped over a chair, these are my absolute favorite throws. This soft, white Target find is still my family's most-loved. It's the one everyone grabs first!
For the simplest of updates, treat your house to a spring bouquet of flowers or a new candle. If you're still burning that pumpkin spice candle, it's time for a change. I'm a huge fan of Jo Malone candles - Peony & Blush Suede is a beautiful floral. I also love Capri Blue - a pretty, light scent that isn't too overpowering.
