Don’t Look Frumpy in Your Jackets. Here are Our Modern, Flattering Favorites!

A jacket can completely change your outfit during the fall. I’ve talked about how wearing a third layer is a key part of any outfit. Third layers during the fall are always more fun! I love fall jackets and finding new, standout pieces AND stylish basics that can spice up a look. All three of these fall jackets are great investment pieces that will help you dump that frump!

Watch videos on how to avoid looking frumpy here, here, and here.

#1 | Mother Sherpa Jacket

The first jacket I got for this fall is one of those fun, standout pieces that really make an outfit pop! I LOVE the chevron pattern and the gorgeous neutral colors. If you missed it, make sure you watch my fall trends video…spoiler alert, this jacket covers a few of the trends! I love the super soft sherpa material, stand collar, and zip front. I styled the jacket over a pre-layered sweater, Spanx faux leather leggings, and combat boots. But you can throw it on over pretty much any look this fall and look super chic!

Make sure you check out this post with how to pull off the layered sweater look.

#2 | Black Blazer

The exact blazer I’m wearing in the photos above is by Balmain. It’s a pretty pricey jacket and I break down if it’s worth the investment in this post. It really is a gorgeous blazer but I know the price point is a little crazy! So, I’ve hunted for the best look-a-likes and I found them! This double-breasted blazer by Express is a really great option for less. And if you want something similar that’s under $100, this Lioness blazer is another favorite! I own both blazers in multiple colors and love them! Obviously, there are some quality differences in hardware, fit, and fabric. But no matter which one you decide on, you won’t be disappointed!

See me wearing the Express blazer here and here.

#3 | Rag & Bone Cargo Jacket

I recently shared this cool Rag & Bone cargo jacket in this post. It’s a lot more versatile than you think! I love the neutral color and the looser fit works really well for layering. The length is also great if you plan to wear skinny jeans and leggings. It will cover your hips, butt, and thighs.
The jacket is also 100% cotton so it’s breathable and lightweight which is ideal for those of you who might run hot (or have hot flashes). The cuffs and waistband are adjustable so you can give yourself more shape and create a waist (giving your jacket a little more feminity)!
This is an investment piece that you’ll wear for years to come, but if you are on a tighter budget, I also wanted to share a really great option for less here.

  1. I think you do a great job of suggesting & explaining how a garment will affect your look. Yes, your price points are not in my range. But I sew and thrift, so your thoughtful writing gives me the principles so that I can apply them in those endeavors.

I’m launching a blog on Jan. 1 and I link to your site from my first post. I refefrence style, and you ARE my favorite style reference. Thanks, Erin.
