I love the style of our modern home. Modern has always been my preference…even when we lived in a very rustic Texas home. When we moved into our Telluride townhome, I was in love with most of the décor. We switched out some of the ski related pieces for things that worked better for our modern interior style. But modern interiors don’t always feel the coziest and warm, and I wanted to include a few touches to add a homey feeling for our family. If you’re wondering how to make a modern house feel more like home, here are five tips for creating a warm and cozy home atmosphere!

Tip #1 | Add Pillows
I added some elegant Cloud9 Design pillows to our living room. I really wanted to add some glamour with sequins and metallic shades. But the overall concept of the extra throw pillows still feels cozy.

Tip#2 | Comfortable Seating
Seating is SO important. You want it to be welcoming and set up to make conversation flow easier. We have two big couches and two club chairs that are all very comfortable. The way they’re arranged makes it easy to sit around our coffee table and just hang out. We also have two built-in benches flanking the fireplace that are great when we have bigger groups and need overflow seating.
I did a post on finding comfortable and stylish accent chairs here.

Tip #3 | Mix Interior Styles
Mixing the styles in a modern home can be tricky. You don’t want it to look like a hodgepodge of design ideas. It depends on your style, but what we did was add some elegant, muted rustic touches to our space. One way we mixed styles was by adding a touch of wood with the big coffee table. Natural materials will integrate well into a modern space and make it feel less harsh and homier. One of my favorite pillows is another way we added a rustic touch. It has a deer skull on it that ties in our Texas life, but it has sequins so it’s still glam!

Tip #4 | Personal Touches
This is probably the easiest way to make a modern living room feel more like home. Add personal touches! Add books on shelves and coffee table, frame some family photos to display, and add sentimental trinkets! Our coffee table has three books that mean something to us and the bookshelf (you can kind of see it in the photo above) is full of our favorite books, trinkets, and family photos.
Tip #5 | House Plants
I do not have a green thumb, so I do not have real house pants! But it’s so easy to add an artificial plant here or there to make a space feel cozier. In our living room, I added a plant on the coffee table that helps brighten it up and bring the outdoors in. We also have one in the corner that’s more for hiding a giant surge protector in one of the outlets. But it pulls double duty. And a small one on the window. If you feel the same way about house plants, I think the best ones are at West Elm and Pottery Barn! I also read that a snake plant is really hard to kill…anyone have one??
