Drawer Organization Tips

Are you feeling scared of your drawers? It can be a pretty common feeling. Stuff just starts to build up and then things might start to spiral out of control. Sound familiar? The other thing… it’s HARDER to organize your drawers because you don’t really look at them all day like you do with a more open closet. Step #1 | Gather Resources

The first step in the organization process is to gather the resources you need for the job. This includes things such as storage containers, bins, and anything else you might need from Amazon or anywhere else. You might even be able to find these things around your house or pick them up at the dollar store. Grab anything that can help with your organizational process…

Examples include in-drawer organizers, shoeboxes, plastic bins, drawer dividers, etc. The key is to collect your materials before you start the process, so you have everything ready to go.

Step #2 | Separate Your Tasks

I recommend you tackle this task in a sequential manner. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of items you have to organize. So first, I’m recommending that you organize by type of clothing.

Underwear and Bras

I find that the underwear drawer is the hardest to keep clean and organized. I feel like no matter what I do, it’s always a hot mess. So many things get picked out and put back all the time that it seems impossible to stay on top of it.

The first step is to find all the things you don’t need, AKA the things you don’t wear. Don’t keep stuff just because you think it’s pretty. If you haven’t worn it in a while, there’s a reason for that. So go over each item individually, and if you haven’t worn it, get rid of it.

As far as organizing everything, I have a system that I would recommend. I put all the bras lengthwise, tucking the straps back, so that everything fits neatly together. I even color code the bras.

I also put two bamboo trays in the drawer where I put all of my underwear. I color code this as well. By doing this, I find that everything stays fairly organized and in its place.

The important thing with organization, and this will apply to everything on this list, is having a system. As long as you have a method of keeping your stuff organized and in place, then you will always have a fast method of putting everything back. After all, it’s not just a one-time organization, it’s an ongoing process.

Socks and Shapewear

If you’re like me, you might hang onto socks for way too long. So start this category with a huge purge. Throw out what you don’t want and keep the ones you wear.

I organize everything in this drawer into bins. I organized the socks by type (active, ankle socks, thick socks, etc.) You can use dividers instead of bins, or whatever works for you.

In another bin I have shapewear, slips, and tights. I organize them all in one bin in order of usage. For example, I put the tights on the bottom because I hardly use them. I keep the most common ones as the most accessible.

Activewear

With activewear, I sort by type and color and put them in the drawer. I simply fold everything and give it each a row in my deep drawers based on type (shorts, tops, tanks, etc.) and color. I keep it very simple for this category, but depending on how many activewear tops and bottoms you have, your needs may vary.

Jeans

If you have a lot of space in your closet, it might be a great idea to hang your jeans. This makes it easier to see them all, and easier to pick out. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of hanging space in my tiny closet.

So I keep my jeans in my drawers. They’re easy to access, and I have a system that works for me. I fold up my jeans and sort them by type and color.

I actually have a special method of folding so that I can place all my jeans on their side. This allows me to see every pair of jeans in my drawer, to make picking one easy. This also makes it easy to take out pairs and put them back. You can check out my folding method in this video: How To organize Your Drawers So They Stay Organized (You Need To Try This)

T-Shirts

T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts are totally fine to put in a drawer, and you could organize them similarly to how I organized my activewear above.

For me, I am currently storing my t-shirts in pretty, linen sweater bins that I found at the container store. I sort by color, fold them, and put them in these handy bins. I find that these are a great place to store my t-shirts, and they keep my shirts wrinkle-free. I can easily open these bins and grab t-shirts when I need to.

You Got This!

Thanks for reading my guide to organizing your dresser drawers! As you can see, there really are a lot of options for organized drawers, and it really comes down to what works best for you. Take an inventory of what you have, what you can get rid of, and then settle on a system.

Drawer organization is an ongoing process. So as long as you have a trusted method of getting organized and staying organized, then you will find you can keep your dresser clean and tidy!

Thank you SO much for stopping by!
