Here are top 5 benefits of shopping local … according to multiple studies.
1) Every $10 million of spending at a local business creates 57 jobs (in comparison the same spending at Amazon creates 14 jobs).
2) For every $100 spent at a local business, an average of $68 stays in the community (with big box retailers an average of only $43 of each $100 stays in the community).
3) Local business owners tend to hire local people… who more accurately represent the demographics of the community.
4) They also tend to donate more to local charities.
5) The customer service is also better because local business owners understand the unique needs of the community.
Okay, just let all that sink in for a moment. Amazing, right? Local businesses are KEY to the vibrancy and success of our communities. To show my support for our local shops, I wanted to share some of my favorites in Telluride!
Local Shops | Telluride, Colorado
Telluride is not just an amazing outdoor playground. The town is FULL of amazing shops! You can grab everything from obscure Italian fashion finds to next level ski gear to edgy, modern jeans you’ll live in! Maybe even original artwork to immortalize your visit. Below is my list of favorite shops…
Clothing Boutiques
Two Skirts
If you are searching for dressier pieces, be sure to stop by Two Skirts. Co-Owner, Kristin Holbook, stocks her beautiful, feminine boutique with a large selection of skirts and dresses. I always enjoy checking out her contemporary, pretty pieces (that you often won’t find online).
Society
The gorgeous, Lynn Jansen, wants everyone to feel welcome at Society! It is located inside an old, historic bank that looks like something from a movie set. It’s a very cozy and inviting space filled with unique fashion finds for both women and men. You’ll love their gifts and accessories too!
Sublime
Sublime has a great range of lines and prices. If you are looking for new, modern denim or edgy cashmere sweaters, be sure to stop by! They have a small girls clothing selection too. Owner, Terryl Dahl, has over 30 years of retail experience.
Scarpe
You’ll find something for the whole family at Scarpe. It’s where I go for gifts, men’s finds and edgy pieces for me. The owner, Jenny DiFore prides herself on her gorgeous, but wearable European finds and excellent customer service.
CashmereRED
Cashmere Red has next, next, next level cashmere. It’s the kind of cashmere that you’ll have for life… and pass down for generations!
Toggery
Toggery is the place for more affordable fashion finds! They carry lines like Free People, Bobi, and Michael Stars. They also carry shoes, boots and clothes for kids. I buy all of Elizabeth’s leggings here.
Heritage
My favorite clothing boutique in Mountain Village. If you’ve never been here before, Mountain Village is a small village connected to Telluride via free gondola. It’s where you will most likely spend a lot of time if you are here to ski.
Sporting Goods
Telluride Sports
Telluride Sports in Mountain Village is where I uncovered all of the next level ski gear brands like Sportalm, Toni Sailer and Bogner. It’s an awesome place to buy a new luxury ski outfit or the perfect accessories. They also rent gear. If you need snow boots or more affordable ski gear, stop by Telluride Sports in town.
Boot Doctors
THE place to rent and buy ski gear. They are highly trained and know their stuff. When I’m looking for ski boots, this is my first stop. They also have a huge selection of ski gear and accessories. I just bought a belt bag to wear over my ski jacket here.
Home Boutiques
Hook
The cutest home decor shop. I always pop in with no agenda and walk out with a treasure like a modern, marble platter. The owner, Lynn Moore, moved to Telluride from Maine over 30-years ago… and she has a son named Gage too!
Sage House Designs
Interior Designer Christy Brown opened her beautiful store in on Main Street in Telluride in 2016, sharing her favorite home brands with locals and visitors. Stay tuned for her newest venture, her own product line, Sage + Co. Fun fact, Christy used to office in my studio.
Tweed
Walking into Tweed is such a treat! It’s like a feast for the eyes with rich colors and textures. I’ve bought a few throw pillows and other home decor finds from their boutique. It’s owned by Robyn Shaw and Victoria Crawford.
Shopping For Art
Telluride Art Gallery
Owners Ashley Hayward and Michael Goldberg specialize in post-war modern and contemporary art. They present many regional and national artists, both early in their careers and those that are already established. You might recognize the gallery facade from many of my photos. I love how the creamy off-white color photographs, and how it kind of looks like a Soho storefront.
Daniel Kanow Fine Art
Daniel Kanow applies large amounts of paint, using pallet knives, large brushes and other non-traditional instruments to construct and deconstruct his artworks. He sells custom abstract, landscape and multi-panel paintings. He also has an energizing selection of prints and reproductions.
Remember to shop local, especially now with everything going on. Your support can mean all the difference in terms of keeping these businesses open and thriving and it can also fuel the local economy, keeping money and jobs local.
