Everything Women Over 40 Need To Know About Wearing A Bodysuit

Bodysuits Over 40

If you are that person who hears the word “bodysuit” and wants to run in the opposite direction, please hear me out. I totally get your reservations, but allow me to share why I think these pieces are a closet essential you will wear again and again.

Below you’ll find all the reasons why I love bodysuits, key tips on how to style them, some of my favorite finds, and I’m also addressing…the bathroom situation!

Let’s do this…

Why Wear A Bodysuit?
  1. STAY PUT. Bodysuits don’t ride up, they actually stay put. Yay for not having to worry about tucking, tucking and tucking again.
  2. NO BUNCHING. Bodysuits are sleek and streamlined which means there’s no added bulk to your frame. You look slimmer!
  3. PERFECT FOR LAYERING. Bodysuits are so lightweight and sleek, they are absolutely ideal for layering. It’s super easy to throw on a bodysuit and a cool jacket with jeans to be ready in minutes!

The Bathroom Situation

I know, it’s gross to talk about. But this is the reality of being a stylish woman. Besides, we do worse things in the name of fashion and beauty, don’t you think? 😉 I know the thought of completely disrobing in the bathroom is scary. But you do NOT have to do that.

Instead, two one of these two options: 1) Unsnap your bodysuit and go potty. 2) Or move your bodysuit to the side and go. The choice is yours! If I’m in a hurry, I use the side method. I get that this is TMI, but I don’t want the bathroom situation to be the reason you dismiss bodysuits.

How To Wear A Bodysuit

Contrary to popular belief, bodysuits can be worn super casually (and conservatively)…they aren’t ALL sexy! Even though there are quite a few sexy options out there, there are also a ton of really cute, casual, and more conservative bodysuits. This t-shirt style bodysuit for example just looks like a normal crewneck tee! When you’re deciding on a bodysuit, think about how you want to wear it. Here are some tips for styling your bodysuit…

  1. Since bodysuits are more fitted, offset that by wearing something looser on the bottom. Like a flowy skirt or baggier jeans.
  2. Wear your bodysuit under something. Bodysuits do draw attention to the waistline. Wear a third layer like a blazer, moto jacket, or cardigan if you’re not feeling super comfortable. The extra layer will also smooth your sides.
  3. If you’re wearing your bodysuit with jeans and really want to cinch in your waist, wear a belt.

I’m sharing a few of my favorite bodysuits that are perfect for women over 40 below! Have you tried a bodysuit yet? What are your thoughts? Team Bodysuit? Please share in the comments below!

1

Ruffled Bodysuit

The first bodysuit I’m wearing in the photos above is the perfect mix of sexy. I love the ruffled asymmetrical shoulders, the fit is amazing, and it pairs perfectly with jeans, shorts, and skirts!
2

V-Wire Bodysuit

The second bodysuit I’m wearing is definitely a sexy option. I paired it with a printed skirt. If you want more coverage, just throw on a jacket. This bodysuit has wiring in it that give a lot of support and makes you feel more secure and held in.
3

T-Shirt Bodysuit

If you haven’t ever tried a bodysuit, this is a great place to start! It’s a classic t-shirt style with a higher crewneck neckline and longer sleeves so you should feel comfortable! It also comes in multiple colors.
4

Spanx Bodysuit

If Spanx made it, it has to be good, right!? Our Community Manager, Denise, bought this bodysuit during the Nordstrom sale and said the fit is amazing!
5

Long Sleeve Bodysuit

I bought this bodysuit in a different color last year and LOVE it! It’s the perfect layering piece and super forgiving around the tummy.
6

Surplice Bodysuit

This bodysuit looks a little lower cut. But remember that with any lower cut bodysuit that’s forgiving like this one, you can wear a pretty lace cami underneath if you aren’t comfortable!
7

Faux Wrap Bodysuit

Similar to the last option, this Paige bodysuit has a forgiving, wrap front that’s very flattering on most body shapes. This would be a great basic to have in your wardrobe!
8

Off The Shoulder Bodysuit

I love this off-the-shoulder bodysuit for fall and winter! It would be perfect with jeans and cute heels for a casual date night!
9

Cutout Bodysuit

How cool are the twisted neckline and cutout details on this bodysuit? This is a great option if you already have a basic bodysuit and want something with a little more interest!
10

Feminine Bodysuit

This Jonathan Simkhai bodysuit is GORGEOUS! It is pricey but this brand has really beautiful high-quality pieces. This bodysuit is so feminine and pretty with the ruffled cuffs, loop trim on the neckline, and beautiful color.
11

Silk Bodysuit

If you’re interested in something dressy, this silk Amanda Uprichard silk bodysuit is perfect! I love the high neckline, draping, and color. And it also comes in black.
12

Casual Bodysuit

If you’re looking for something more casual, go with this cute Free People bodysuit. It looks like a basic white tee with fun puffed shoulders!
13

Knit Bodysuit

Since we’re moving into fall, this knit bodysuit is another casual piece that will be a little warmer. You can throw this on with jeans for a casual, chic look!

  1. Ummm what, are some of these braless?? And are they supportive? I’m looking at that second one in particular.

Who knew there were so many styles of these!

    1. Great question, Kate! These are braless. As far as wearing a bra with these bodysuits, it just depends on the neckline. Some you can wear a bra under and others you can’t. If you can’t make sure the fabric is such that it will hold you in. xo

  2. Regarding a bodysuit and going to the bathroom, the “move bodysuit to the side and go” is a competitive swimming trick just sub bathing suit. You know how tight the suits are, we would miss half the practice pulling our suits up! You gave me a giggle!

  3. I love the varied textures in this look! As usual, you look fantastic – thanks for toughing it out in the heat!!!
